Self-check
If you have landed here after a bad week at work, or a lifetime of wondering, this page walks through what clinicians actually look for — and what a checklist can and cannot tell you.
In short: No online test can diagnose ADHD. A diagnosis requires symptoms that are persistent, present in more than one setting, and interfering with daily life — assessed by a clinician who also rules out conditions that look similar, such as anxiety, depression and poor sleep. DaniCare provides psychiatrist-led ADHD evaluations in Texas, New Jersey and New York. Call (956) 266-8476.
There is no single test that diagnoses ADHD — not a blood test, not a brain scan, and certainly not a quiz. The free tests you have probably already taken are screeners at best and entertainment at worst.
What a list of symptoms can do is tell you whether a conversation with a clinician is worth having. That is the honest purpose of this page. Nothing below is scored, and nothing below is a diagnosis.
ADHD symptoms fall into two groups. Some people have mostly one, some have both. Read these thinking about the last six months, and about how you are most of the time — not on your worst day.
Everyone recognises a few of these. What matters clinically is different: symptoms that are persistent rather than occasional, present in more than one setting — work and home, not just one bad job — and actually getting in the way of your life.
If the answer to all three is yes, an evaluation is likely to be useful whatever the outcome.
This is the part the online quizzes leave out, and it is the reason a real evaluation matters. Several common conditions produce the same trouble with focus and follow-through:
Treating the wrong one wastes months. An evaluation exists to tell them apart — and sometimes the answer is that you have two of them at once.
Symptoms now and in childhood, how they affect work, study, home and relationships, plus medical, family and mental health history.
Anxiety, depression, sleep, substance use and physical health are examined rather than assumed away.
A clear summary of the findings and recommendations that you keep.
Your psychiatrist explains what the findings mean and discusses options, including what happens if you would rather not start medication.

The same logic applies, but the information comes from more places: parents, teachers, report cards and the child. Children are evaluated with a parent or guardian taking part, and the written report can support a request for school accommodations such as a 504 plan.
Adult ADHD is common and often identified long after school.
Figures verified September 2026. Statistics describe populations, not individuals — only an evaluation can say whether ADHD explains what you are experiencing. Symptom descriptions follow the categories used by the CDC.
Evaluations are available in person in Laredo, Texas and by secure telehealth to patients located in the states where our psychiatrists are licensed:
No. There is no single test that diagnoses ADHD. Online questionnaires are screeners — they can suggest that an evaluation is worth having, but a diagnosis requires a clinician to assess how long symptoms have been present, whether they appear in more than one setting, how much they interfere with daily life, and whether something else explains them better.
Yes. Many people compensate successfully until demands increase — university, a demanding job, parenthood — and the strategies stop working. Being bright, or having done well in a structured environment, does not rule ADHD out.
No. More than half of adults with a current ADHD diagnosis were first diagnosed at age 18 or older. A diagnosis in adulthood still changes what treatment and support are available to you.
No referral is needed to request an evaluation with DaniCare, though some insurance plans require one for coverage. Our team checks your plan when you call (956) 266-8476.
That is still a useful answer. If anxiety, depression, a sleep problem or something else is driving the symptoms, you leave knowing what to treat instead — and DaniCare treats those conditions too.
