For military families in San Antonio

San Antonio has one of the largest concentrations of military families in the country, and military life makes an ADHD evaluation harder in specific ways. You move, so the childhood history is scattered across several school systems. The parent who could describe it may be on the other side of the world. And the referral you were waiting on starts over when you PCS.

We accept TRICARE East and West. An evaluation by video means the process survives the next move: you keep the same clinician, and the written report goes with you rather than staying in a file at a clinic you have left.

If the evaluation is for a child, we can work from what you have — report cards, teacher notes, an old individualised education plan from another state — rather than requiring documents from one district.

A border city, seen by a border practice

Around two thirds of Bexar County is Hispanic or Latino, and a great many families here live the same way ours do in Laredo: English at work, Spanish at home, and both in the same sentence when something matters.

We take histories in Spanish as a matter of course. That counts for more than convenience in an ADHD assessment. A grandmother describing how a child was at seven, or a parent explaining that they were the same, is evidence — the pattern has to date back — and it is worth having that account in the language it is actually remembered in.

What the evaluation involves

  1. A full history

A psychiatrist asks how attention, memory and impulsivity show up at work, in training, at school and at home, how far the pattern goes back, and what else might explain it.

  2. Ruling things out

Sleep debt, anxiety, depression, head injury, thyroid conditions and substance use all imitate ADHD. A medical doctor can consider and exclude them; a screening questionnaire cannot.

  3. A clear answer, in writing

You are told whether this is ADHD, what else was considered, and what the options are. The written report is yours to keep and to carry.

  4. Treatment if you want it

Medication is prescribed only when a diagnosis is made, it is clinically appropriate and state and federal law permit it. Nothing is prescribed before it has been explained.

For San Antonio parents

Northside, North East, San Antonio ISD, Judson and Northside's neighbours all handle ADHD through 504 plans and special education referrals. Each wants the same thing: documentation of the diagnosis and its effect on how a child functions in class, not a letter naming a condition.

We ask for input from school as well as home, because a diagnosis requires the pattern to appear in more than one setting — and because a report built on both is the one that gets acted on when you hand it in.

Cost and insurance

We accept most major plans in Texas, including TRICARE East and West, Medicaid and Medicare. Before anything is booked, our team checks your specific plan and tells you what you can expect to pay.

Without insurance there are still options. Ask when you call — it is an ordinary conversation here.

ADHD in adults: the numbers

Adult ADHD is common and often identified long after school.

  • 15.5 millionU.S. adults (6.0%) had a current ADHD diagnosis in 2023. CDC MMWR, 2024
  • 55.9%of adults with current ADHD were first diagnosed at age 18 or older, not in childhood. CDC MMWR, 2024
  • 11.7%of U.S. children aged 3–17 have a current ADHD diagnosis, so many adults recognize themselves once a child is evaluated. CDC

Figures verified September 2026. Statistics describe populations, not individuals — only an evaluation can say whether ADHD explains what you are experiencing.

San Antonio ADHD evaluation FAQs

Do you accept TRICARE?

Yes, TRICARE East and West. Call (956) 266-8476 and our team will confirm how your specific plan applies before anything is booked.

What if we PCS during the process?

Tell us. If you move to Texas, California, New York or New Jersey you can stay with the same clinician by video. If you move elsewhere, we will make sure you leave with the written report so the next clinician is not starting from nothing.

My child changed schools three times. Is that a problem?

No, and it is common in military families. We work from whatever you have — report cards, teacher comments, a plan from a previous district — rather than requiring a single school's paperwork.

Do I need to be in Texas for the appointment?

Yes. You must be physically located in Texas at the time of the visit, because that is where the licence applies. It is where you are that matters, not where you live.

Is the evaluation done by a psychiatrist?

Yes. Evaluations are led by a psychiatrist — a medical doctor — who can rule out the conditions that imitate ADHD and prescribe when that is appropriate.

Can we be seen in Spanish?

Yes, as a matter of course rather than by special arrangement. Tell our team when you call.

Is there a waitlist?

No. Call (956) 266-8476 and our team will tell you what is available.
